A Brief Introduction to Microsoft Windows Server...

With the popularity of Microsoft Windows in the office, and Windows for Workgroups peer to peer networking capabilities being limited, Microsoft developed Windows NT Server 3.5 and the New Technology File System, which was released in 1993 as a dedicated Server for a Client/Server environment.

Today, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is the current edition of Microsoft’s Server Operating system.
There are six different versions of the Server operating system; Standard, Web, DataCenter, Enterprise, HPC, and Server 2008 for Itanium Based Systems, as well as a Small Business edition.

Microsoft Windows Server functionality includes among others:

  • Active Directory; A system to control and manage users, computers, printers, resources and locations. The system is hierarchical, easy to manage with a GUI management interface.
  • New technologies such as Read Only Domain Controllers and NAP (Network Access Protection) help to keep the system secure.
  • Virtualisation; The ability to run several virtual machines on a single piece of hardware to help reduce the cost of hardware.
  • Internet Information Services; A Web Server to enable the development and secure hosting of web sites.
